Gary
Richardson's Epiphany Musical Enterprises
THE
ROCK: What was your
motivation to get into the
music business?
Gary Richardson: I can't
really say that there was a
motivation. In a real sense, I was born into it... my
Dad was a musician. He was a trumpeter with a big band
that he and another buddy had created called the Blue
Notes, featuring a female vocalist by the name of Ruby
Glover.
THE ROCK: How do you classify
your music?
Gary Richardson: I've been
blessed to have been
exposed to so many types of music in my career that
as
a musician it's impossible to favor just one type of
music. This is why "Epiphany" is so important.
It
infuses everything that I appreciate about different
musical stylings. It's jazz, soul, r&b , hip hop...
a
little of whatever we decide creatively to express in
our music. However, if I were ever to find a true need
to give it a label, I would call it cool jazz. It's
very cool the way we're able to blend it all together
very respectfully to each style infused in the
"Epiphany" sound.
THE
ROCK: What attracted you to this profession?
Gary Richardson: Once again,
I can only elaborate
further on what I have stated earlier on what is my
motivation for being in this industry. There is an
aray of stories I could give. But I'll give you a
small hint. Miles , Trane , Dizzy, Sarah, Coleman
Hawkins, and my dad.
THE
ROCK: What made you decide to go into
business for
yourself?
Gary Richardson: I believe
everyone truly would like
to work for themselves. For me, I enjoy doing
something that I love and getting paid for it opposed
to doing a thing because I must. Though you may work
much harder and longer than the nine to fiver, believe
it or not, it's less stressful and organically
healthier for the heart, mind, body and spirit.
THE
ROCK: Why do you believe entrepreneurship
to be so
important?
Gary Richardson: Well...
as Africans, we were the
original merchants of commerce. And in our efforts to
assimulate, we've lost that which we were... the
masters of commerce. We have become Americans opposed
to African Americans who understand and embraced the
richness and wealth of our heritage. It's important
for us as a people to clasp with understanding that
we
can become the supplier for the demand.
THE
ROCK: What do you find are some of the
upsides of
owning a business?
Gary Richardson: The most
important of the many
upsides is that for the most part you are in control
of your own life. The responsibility and
accountability remains with you and you alone.
THE
ROCK: What about the downsides?
Gary Richardson: At this
piont, I can't view any
downsides. "Anything worth doing is difficult".
THE
ROCK: What is your best advice to someone
who
wants to start a business in the music industry?
Gary Richardson: Read,
read, read. Learn, learn,
learn. Never quit, never quit. When you get knocked
down, Get Up... and I mean GET UP!!
THE ROCK: What is your purpose
in doing what you do?
Gary Richardson: The scriptures/doctrines...
I
subscribe to say, Love thy neighbor as thy self. The
music "Epiphany" creates... I like to think
of it as
being very organic, very medicinal, and a spiritual
massage to one's spirit. It's my personal way of
giving back the love that My father God and Christ has
givin me in spirit and talent.
THE
ROCK: Are you signed to a record company?
If not,
were you signed?
Gary Richardson: I'm not
realy that concerned about a
label deal. Like Prince has said often... who needs
them. You become the record label and supply the
demand.
THE
ROCK: What is the hardest thing about
trying to
get signed by a major record label?
Gary Richardson: Keeping
your pants up. Not wondering
what happen.
THE
ROCK: What attribute(s) is needed to become
a
successful entertainer?
Gary Richardson: Hard work,
Hard work, Hard work. You
get knocked down... GET UP!!
THE
ROCK: What three words best describe you?
Gary Richardson: God, Christ,
Global.
THE ROCK: What do you expect
from your audience after
a breath-taking performance?
Gary
Richardson: I want a spiritual connection that
makes them want to hear more. When the music is right,
everyone knows it.
THE
ROCK: What is driving you to success?
Gary Richardson: Smiles,laughter,
and warm hands of
appreciation in great delight of an entertaining
evening of just good music.
THE
ROCK: Where do you see yourself five years
from
now?
Gary Richardson: Well-engrossed
and very successful in
my career as an artist and CEO.
THE
ROCK: Where can we find you on the Internet?
Gary Richardson: The Internet
is presently being
developed.
THE
ROCK: Thank you Mr. Richardson, and best
wishes.
